Why Foam?

Because it is one of the highest performing air barriers on the market today. It does not allow wall condensation, retards mold and mildew, carries the highest R-value ratings, is environmentally friendly, significantly improves indoor air quality, offers no food value for insects and does not settle, shrink, sag, turn into dust or decline in R-value over time.

Should I Use Closed or Open Cell Foam?

Both are excellent choices verses the traditional fiberglass batting depending on your goals. Open cell provides superior sound absorption while closed cell has a higher R-value and provides the best moisture barrier.

Are All Foam Products of the Same Quality?

No. There are many different manufactures of foam with varying levels of quality each with different densities. Green Apple Insulation can provide you with a comparison of products, costs and attributes so that you can make an informed decision.

I have received several estimates for insulting my home. The prices vary greatly. Shouldn’t they be more comparable?

When comparing Apples to Apples, the prices will generally be similar. However, as the homeowner you should make sure that each contractor’s estimate includes the same amount of foam (thickness), the same quality of product and the same quality of service.   1. As of January 2011, the new ICC Code states that an ignition barrier must be applied over any open cell
    foam sprayed in an attic or crawl space. This coating can be applied by a painter with an airless sprayer
    or by the foam insulation applicator. No open cell foam on the market meets code requirements
    without the application of an ignition barrier.

  2. Beware of pressure salesmen who misrepresent foam attributes. It is not uncommon for some to represent
    half density foam as double density.     Choose a reputable contractor which will guide you in the selection of
    the appropiate foam product for your application and make certain you recieve the product you purchased.

  3. There are a number of foam applicators that apply half density foam and represent it as closed cell foam.
    This is erroneous and a deliberate misrepresentation of the product.

  4. Beware of off-brand foams. Some applicators are using foam that is new to the industry and which is long
    on promises but short on delivery. For example, if you were to paint the exterior of your home, would you feel
    more comfortable using Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, or other nationally recognized products backed
    by a strong warrenty guarantee or a "new" product mixed in Joe Entepreneur;s garage. The point is to check
    not only the paper promise but make sure the company has the resources to support product warrenties.

  5. Over 70% of the foam applicators in this market do not carry both Workmen's Compensation and General Liability
    Insurance. Make sure that your contractor is fully insured and enjoys a top rating with the Better Business Bureau.
